Kevin Mills, Founder and CEO of Pedalling Possibilities
Kevin Mills is the Founder and CEO of Pedalling Possibilities, a Canadian non-profit organization. Additionally, he serves as the Co-Founder and President of the Board of Directors at Walk It Off Spinal Cord Recovery and Wellness Centre, a non-profit based in Ontario.
Kevin's life took a significant turn in 2009 during a swim off the coast of Cuba. A large rogue wave submerged him head first into the ocean floor. He was immediately paralyzed and subsequently rescued by his brother-in-law and wife. The resulting spinal cord injury left him as a C4 Complete Quadriplegic. He was told by the surgeons that he would be lucky to shrug his shoulders in the future.
Before his injury, Kevin had a distinguished career as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) with Toronto Emergency Medical Services, including service with the specialized Toronto Police Marine Unit as a marine medic. Kevin was an elite level middle distance runner, rock climber, and Rescue Diver.
In 2022, Kevin, together with his Neuro-Recovery Specialist and cycling partner Nikki Davenport, launched Pedalling Possibilities. Their mission was to hand cycle across Canada, establishing an accessible route while advocating for accessibility, inclusivity, and post-injury activity. Starting from Cape Spear, Newfoundland in May 2023, they covered 8400 km over four months, hand cycling between 80-140 km per day, culminating in a triumphant arrival in Victoria, BC. Kevin's journey made history as the first quadriplegic to hand cycle across Canada, inspiring individuals with disabilities and advancing inclusivity in Canadian society.
In the fall of 2024, he was honoured with induction into the Newmarket Sports Hall of Fame. Kevin holds an undergraduate degree in Justice and Public Safety from the University of Guelph, as well as a diploma in Paramedicine from Humber College. Kevin shares his life with his wife and best friend, Heather, and is a proud father to Evan, an active 17-year-old who admirably follows in his father's footsteps.
