Businesses operating in Nunavut will have to comply with new language laws.
The Inuit Language Protection Act came into force on July 9, 2017. Businesses operating in Nunavut will have to comply with section 3 of the Act, which imposes Inuit language obligations for the commercial activities of private enterprises. Similar to French language laws in Quebec, the law requires that Inuit language be displayed prominently on public signs, posters, advertising, and invoices, and be spoken at customer and reception service centers. The Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut has published a compliance template and guidelines to assist private sector companies to improve their compliance with the Act.
